  Basic Program

Whatever your musical tastes,  Trinity College London has the music qualifications for you.

Every year Trinity College London supports the music education of thousands of students with assessments across a wide spectrum including Classical, Jazz and Rock & Pop music.

Classical & Jazz Grades

Our graded exams from Initial to Grade 8 allow learners to perform to their strengths; the flexible structure enables learners to gain recognition for their own unique skills as performers.

Performance is at the heart of Trinity’s graded music assessments as we believe that musicianship is most effectively demonstrated through practical performance.

Our exams can be taken in Piano, Singing, Brass, Electronic Keyboard, Organ, Classical and Acoustic Guitar, Drum Kit & Percussion, Strings, Woodwind and Jazz Woodwind and Theory of Music.

Background

Bertha Spies was an associate professor in music theory at the NWU School of Music from 1993 until 2003. During the early years of her tenure, Prof Spies recognized a serious need to improve and enrich the lives of children from low socio-economic communities in Potchefstroom. In her view, the method to accomplish this aim was through music making and formal music training. During the last two decades Ms Dirkie Nell and Ms Annette Massyn provided valuable leadership in the Musikhane Community Music Engagement Programme.

Current configuration

In response to changing social and economic circumstances, the Musikhane Community Music Engagement Programme has taken on various guises. Currently Musikhane partners with:

  • Mosaic to provide approximately 20 participants with beginner instrumental education;

  • Vyfhoek Primary School to provide musical experiences to Grade R learners;

  • Huis Anna Viljoen to facilitate Dalcroze inspired musical experiences to the elderly;

  • Potchefstroom Primary School to engage approximately 50 intermediate phase learners in music learning and ensemble activites.

  • Ridgewood College : New Upcoming programme for 2020

These partnerships serve as valuable relationships with the community, since students get real-time critical feedback on their teaching practice from members of staff and community partners. To enhance the critical service learning possibilities of Musikhane, participation in the programme is integrated as practical experience in the music education and community music modules in the Diploma and BA programmes at the School of Music.

Purpose

The Musikhane Community Music Engagement Programme strives to create opportunities for meaningful musical experiences for learners and student-teachers involved in the community music programme.

Vision

Creating opportunities to care for one another through musicing.

Mission

Musikhane improves the lives of members of the community by providing greater access to meaningful music educational experiences. Through music and movement participants explore what it means to be part of a community of learners, developing their musical and social skills along the way. Student-teachers experience the ecstasy and frustrations of teaching in a real-world setting, equipping them to become future music educators and community music practitioners.

The Kingdom Of Sound

Early Childhood Music Program

(From 3 years old - Introduction to Music)

The Kingdom of Sound is a music program designed to take young first time music explorers on an interactive journey into the world of music. The program has been created to first and foremost instil a love and appreciation for music while introducing young students to key foundational music concepts. By means of interactive games, songs, stories, and activities each lesson takes the students on a fantastical journey through the ‘Kingdom Of Sound’ where the  students explore foundational music theory, ear training and rhythm development.

In this first of its kind early childhood music program the students will discover the world of music alongside Little Zee, the protagonist from our accompanying storybook: “The Adventures of Little Zee in the Kingdom of Sound”.

Little Zee’s epic adventures across imaginative landscapes will equip the students with foundational music knowledge and skills while diving deep into the mesmerizing history of music, as well as the exciting new world of todays music across all genres and cultures. With our colourful entourage of whacky musical friends from ‘The Kingdom of Sound’, we will embark on a voyage around the world to visit kids just like us to learn more about them and how music fits into their world.

Music lives in all of us and unites us across our differences - Lets teach our kids to love, and how to love and enjoy music while we equip them with the knowledge to become the next generation of songwriters, performers, producers, composers, entertainers, and incredible   human beings.
